understanding Ao Nang; this is primarily a central transport hub

Ao Nang Beach is the central beach hub of Krabi where the main road meets the coast, and from where boats depart to other beaches and islands. It is a nerve centre for road and water transport, hotels, restaurants and shopping.
.
However, Ao Nang Beach is not one of those stunning tropical beauties that have made Krabi so famous, and beachfront accommodation here on the main beach is restricted to a single hotel, Krabi Resort, and 2 restaurants that have added a few rooms.
.
The lack of beachfront land for hotels has pushed most of Krabi's tourist accommodation into back roads and up into the hills behind Ao Nang, leaving many far from the beach. However, false advertising is rife in Krabi, often leading would-be guests to believe hotels are right by the sand when they aren't – so beware, and note the few true beachfront hotels on the Krabi beach maps herein.
.
There is one 5-star beachfront surprise at Ao Nang, but it is impossible to see from the main village despite that it is only a brief jump from the south end of Ao Nang Beach. The dramatic Centara Grand Krabi Resort is crafted into a small, stunningly beautiful beach and bay hidden by the huge headland that towers over Ao Nang Village. The resort's first plan to dig a tunnel through the 250 metres of rock separating it from Ao Nang met strong public resistance, so access is now restricted to boat only. See our photos of this stunningly beautiful location and idyllic resort.
.
The northern half of Ao Nang beach has a road right on the waterline, and is the shopping and transport centre. Several small convenience stores and minimarts are found here, along with pharmacies, restaurants, travel agents and other tourist oriented businesses.
.
Hanging out over the sand at the very northern end by Krabi Resort is a line of beachfront restaurants and bars – pleasant places for sunset drinks or a romantic dinner.
.
Ao Nang Beach's south end has a walking street along the beach. This is an attractive and interesting area, with many small bars and restaurants and perhaps Thailand’s biggest beach massage market. Each day the open-air salas with mattresses witness the kneading, twisting and pounding of hundreds of visitors in Thai massage and body therapy. Many overweight foreign visitors can be seen crawling up from their massage kneading and flexing feeling so relaxed that can only move a few metres to a bar and a cold beer.
.
Many Krabi visitors end up choosing Ao Nang as a second choice and sleep in a hotel far from the beach – sometimes in disappointment. Drawn by the iconic beaches that have come to represent Krabi as a whole, Railay Beach and Thum Phra Nang Beach, they find all accommodations booked solid through the high season. There is little choice but to sleep in Ao Nang, and boat into Railay each morning, and out each evening. There is so much traffic between Railay and Ao Nang that a local longtail boat cooperative manages the boats, with set prices clearly printed on a board. A longtail departs each time a boatman can get eight passengers, or thereabouts.
.
With all of the traffic coming and going by land and sea, Ao Nang has the feeling of a port, or halfway house, but a not a real destination in itself. However, for those eager to do more than relax on a beach during their Krabi stay, Ao Nang is the ideal base from which to explore the area.

Ao Nang is one of Krabi’s most famous beaches – but it is not for the reasons that many people understand. This beach is not very beautiful compared to most in Krabi.  At low tide the water is shallow and muddy and not at all suitable for swimming. Ao Nang’s main purpose is transport hub for Krabi – the place visitors set out from to get to Krabi’s stunningly beautiful beaches and islands. Ao Nang is also a major accommodation centre, but there are almost no hotels right on the beach here. Most Ao Nang hotels are set along this road running towards the mountains, far from the beach.  If you’re looking for a beachfront hotel, beware of Ao Nang. Ao Nang is the major tourist shopping area in Krabi, with the beach road completely lined with shops serving the tourist industry. There was nothing here but coconut palms before tourist arrived in Krabi. Ao Nang is the jumping off point for Krabi’s most famous beach, Railay, an 8 minute boat ride away.
