Koh Yao Yai, on the horizon east of Phuket

Koh Yao Yai lies on the horizon east of Phuket, an hour's boat ride away. Here is a tropical island where life in the villages has not yet been interrupted by tourism – there are too few beach resorts and tourists here.
.
The west coast beaches are tranquil, with hardly a building in sight of the sand. Trees or coconut palms overhang most of the beaches, and the occasional fisherman's wife can be seen drying fish on a beach. Rubber tappers meander through the plantations on put-put motorcycles.
.
Four of the five beach accommodations here are clustered on the southwest facing Phuket. Only the Elixir Resort & Spa could be called up-market, with a full range of more comfortable services. This offers beach cottages right by the sand, and pool villas with elevation giving sea views back to Phuket.
.
The Heaven is a new effort at providing a better level of comfort, with air conditioned rooms, modern bathrooms and even free internet access.
.
The other beach accommodations on the island are budget bungalows with very basic services. But their beaches can also be attractive and tranquil.
.
Koh Yao Yai has a concrete road running its full length, with a few side roads off to other beaches, all of which make interesting touring by motorcycle. You can rent a motorcycle in most parts of the island for just a few dollars a day. At the northern end is the island's largest community, a small fleet of fishing boats and a long jetty from where one can cross to Koh Yai Noi or take a ferry to Phuket.
