Remote, undeveloped, Mai Khao is evidence that Phuket is far from over-developed

Mai Khao Beach is one of Phuket’s straightest and longest stretches of sand, running 10 kilometres from the airport to the very top of the island. Mai Khao is one beach where you can have almost endless beach to yourself. For those looking for real peace & quiet on Phuket, this is a romantic hideaway, a tropical escape and proof that not all Phuket beaches are overdeveloped.
.
Mai Khao Beach has is fine, soft sand and water clarity that is excellent through the calm, high season months. It has no offshore reef, giving good water depth that makes this one of the best swimming beaches on Phuket. In places the beach is a bit narrow and steep. See the photos. Like all Phuket beaches, it changes radically during the monsoon season when waves pound the beach, making it dangerous at times – but not always, for during the monsoon months there are regular calm, blue-sky breaks.
.
All resorts here are beachfront, and most offer 5-star luxury, with just a few budget cottages remaining – and also shown on our beach map. A few famous name resorts have planted their flags on Mai Khao – Marriott, Anantara, Renaissance, Holiday Inn – suggesting a big future for this end of the island. All have full spa service, massage treatments and a health centre.
.
The resort with the most outstanding architectural character is the unusual, 'designer' resort, Sala Phuket. But Anantara Phuket Resort is also quite stunning in design and style. The JW Marriott Phuket Resort was the first hotel on this beach, and has an amazing 500 metre-long beachfront. Renaissance Phuket Resort is another upmarket resort here with attractive modern design. At the south end of our map – but far from the south end of Mai Khao Beach – is a group of accommodations that range from Holiday Inn Phuket Resort to cheap bungalows in two small establishments left over from Phuket's days as a budget bungalow resort.
.
All hotels on Mai Khao have a 40 metre setback from the high-tide line, officially national park land, creating a natural green buffer. See the resort photos.
.
The back-of-beach area is undeveloped scrubland and lagoons, with neither a local village, commercial centre nor even a 'tourist village' of the kind that usually springs up around groups of hotels. In 2014 there was just one small shop and a restaurant between the Marriott and Sala Thai. Thus, there is almost no dining or entertainment in this area outside the hotels, save the distinctly Thai beach restaurants two kilometres north up the beach from the Marriott. But this lack of local restaurants and shops is sure to change quickly, for this is Thailand, a country where restaurants appear almost as fast as the dishes they serve.
