The east coast of Koh Chang is truly remote, with only a few, small, beaches

The east coast of Koh Chang is quite rugged and undeveloped, and there are few beaches here. A road runs down the length of the island, with little along the way except beautiful ocean and mountain views. There are just a few, more simple beachfront accommodations here.
.
The few beaches are very basic, without the beautiful white sands of the west coast. Much of the shorelines is given over to mangroves forests, mud and rocks.
.
The prettiest exception is Sai Daeng Beach (Amber Sands) at the northeast corner of the island. As the name implies, the sand here is a reddish, amber colour. This website has qualified two comfortable beachfront resorts here, along with two others on remoter stretches of the coast.
.
The beach is pretty without being spectacular – except sometimes in the very early morning, and more often before sunset. At these times the amber-coloured sands can take on an especially bright reddish hue, turning the beach into an extraordinary sight, a near-red beach, truly worthy of the name Amber Sands. Some of the photos shown in the gallery here might look as if the colours are computer-enhanced – but, no, the only boost in the colour was that provided by a warm sunset sky.
.
The coloured sand is hard-packed. The water is shallow and not great for swimming. This side of the island is for those seeking complete tranquillity, for those looking for a true island hideaway. Bring some good books, for the main entertainment here is watching the sun rise over the ocean in nearby Cambodia.
.
Three-star Amber Sands Resort offers comfortable, clean rooms in either garden chalets facing wide lawns and coconut palms, or in a block with seaview rooms. It is spacious and relaxing, definitely for those who want something different. This has a small swimming pool, spa, beachfront restaurant and free internet.
.
The Souk Koh Chang has just 10 unusual, round beach bungalows – some just a couple of steps from the pretty, amber sands. This, too, has lots of open space in a coconut garden though there is no pool here.
